Save the Date: Amy-Jill Levine comes to First Presbyterian April 4-6!
Distinguished Jewish New Testament scholar Dr. Amy-Jill Levine will lead a weekend of engaging learning at First Presbyterian Church as part of the "Seeking God’s Peace” theme year. Through lectures, discussions, and worship, the event will explore how different interpretations of Scripture can foster deeper understanding, respect, and peace among faith traditions.
Friday, April 4, 3 - 4:30 pm in the James Park Room Dr. Levine will begin with a private clergy conversation on “Avoiding antisemitism in preaching and teaching,” offering historical insights and practical guidance for pastors.
Saturday, April 5, 10-11 am in the chapel: Families are invited to a morning story time where Dr. Levine will read from her children’s books, followed by a discussion for parents on talking to children about faith with curiosity and compassion.
In the evening of April 5th at 7 pm in the Sanctuary, Dr. Levine will give a public lecture, "Understanding Jesus Means Understanding Judaism," on how Jewish and Christian traditions interpret shared scriptures, emphasizing dialogue, wisdom, and mutual respect. Drawing from The Bible With and Without Jesus, she will explore how these perspectives have shaped faith over time. A reception in Fellowship Hall will follow.
Sunday, April 6: Dr. Levine will teach a 9:30 am Sunday School session on Jesus’ teachings in their Jewish context, preach during the 11:00 am worship service, and participate in a brief meet-and-greet afterward.
